The Culture Collective Workspace Design: African Identity Powers Warner Music in Johannesburg

When Warner Music Africa tasked Tétris with designing more than an office—they wanted a workspace embodying African musical and cultural heritage while driving commercial growth. As Warner Music and Africori grew, they needed a unified space that could embody their shared mission: advancing African music on the global stage.

Tétris together JLL delivered an integrated solution that transformed this challenge into opportunity. The real estate team identified and secured premises capable of housing both entities. Tétris then designed The Culture Collective, a cultural workspace design that merges African identity with commercial music business. PDS managed construction and project delivery, ensuring the building fit-out and project execution met lease agreements, client timelines, and budget requirements.

The result is a 1,400m² creative ecosystem were culture powers commerce.

The Challenge – Two Companies, One Vision

Warner Music Africa and Africori shared a common goal: to elevate African artists and music culture globally. However, operating from separate offices limited their ability to collaborate effectively.

The leadership teams needed more than office space. They required a cultural workspace design that would:

  • Unite two companies under one roof
  • Reflect the authenticity of African music and culture
  • Generate revenue beyond traditional office functions
  • Foster community, creativity, and commercial success

The project began by identifying suitable premises in Johannesburg that could accommodate both operational teams while meeting budgetary and logistical requirements;

A Strategic Real Estate Solution

The Real Estate team successfully secured a building that aligned with Warner and Africori’s operational needs. The space offered flexibility, accessibility, and the physical footprint necessary for a transformative cultural workspace design.

With the premises secured, Tétris was tasked with bringing the vision to life.

An Integrated Approach to Cultural Workspace Design

Tétris anchored the cultural workspace design around four pillars core to African music culture: Community, Music, Art, and Fashion. These pillars informed every design decision, from spatial flow to material selection.

The ground floor became the “Creative Lifestyle Hub,” a public-facing zone designed to incubate creativity. A Baraza-inspired reception area—modelled on traditional circular gathering spaces—welcomes visitors into a collective mindset. This cultural workspace design element signals belonging and shared purpose from the moment of arrival.

Adjacent to reception, a flexible performance space transforms from collaborative studio by day into a revenue-generating events venue by night. An observation-style podcast booth housed in an upcycled shipping container overlooks murals by renowned African artists, connecting indoor creativity to outdoor celebration spaces.

The first floor, the “Business Hub,” integrates African identity into daily workflow. Curated continental artworks and custom textiles from local artisans transform functional workspace into a storytelling gallery. Circular design motifs—inspired by communal gathering traditions—are repeated throughout, from the central harvest table in the café to meeting room layouts.

Sustainability and Local Craftsmanship

Tétris repurposed 40% of existing furniture and infrastructure. The podcast studio’s shipping container is a standout example of creative reuse within this cultural workspace design.

Extensive collaboration with African artisans, fabricators, and artists ensured the space was built by Africans for Africa. Local textiles upholster furniture, Indigenous prints adorn walls, and custom artwork tells stories of shared continental identity.

Natural light, balconies, and integrated planters promote air quality and wellbeing, aligning the cultural workspace design with contemporary sustainability standards.

Project Delivery Excellence

Project and Development Services team managed all construction and project delivery phases, ensuring seamless coordination between building fit-out, client timelines, and lease obligations. Strict budget compliance was maintained throughout the 10-month project duration, with proactive communication ensuring all stakeholders remained aligned.

Where Culture Meets Commerce

The Culture Collective demonstrates how cultural workspace design can function as a strategic business asset. Warner Music Africa and Africori now operate from a unified hub that:

  • Fosters collaboration between artists, business teams, and creative collectives
  • Generates revenue through event hosting and public programming
  • Strengthens brand identity through authentic African storytelling
  • Supports local economies via partnerships with regional artisans

By day, the space facilitates connection, creation, and shared meals. By night, it transforms into a performance venue, turning creative preparation into public celebration.

This cultural workspace design proves that office environments can do more than house employees—they can embody brand values, drive commercial outcomes, and become cultural landmarks.

A New Benchmark for African Corporate Design

JLL’s integrated approach—Tenant Representation & advisory, Tétris design, and Project and Development Services project delivery—created a workspace that transcends traditional office conventions. The Culture Collective is a living example of how cultural authenticity can be harnessed as a commercial strategy.

For Warner Music Africa and Africori, the space is more than a headquarters. It is a home for African music, a platform for global ambition, and a testament to the power of cultural workspace design.s that office environments can do more than house employees—they can embody brand values, drive commercial outcomes, and become cultural landmarks.
