SBM Offshore faced a pivotal challenge. Their former office in Schiedam, a twelve-story tower, unintentionally created silos—isolating teams and limiting spontaneous collaboration. In seeking a new Rotterdam location, SBM aimed for more than just a move. They needed an environment that would bring their people together, foster community, and attract future talent.
Through intensive workshops, interviews, and open dialogue, we at Tétris identified SBM’s real strength: collaboration and a strong sense of community. This core insight would guide every decision throughout the workplace transformation.
Our Approach – Designing Community Through Districts
City-Inspired Office Design
We reimagined SBM’s workspace as a city district. The office is organized into distinct “neighbourhoods,” each inspired by Rotterdam localities like Delfshaven and Kralingen. These districts boast their own unique materials, visuals, and atmospheres—making wayfinding intuitive and enriching the workday with local character.
The Social Heart – A Central Hub
At the center of the transformation is a vibrant, 1000m² work café, modelled after Rotterdam’s bustling city center. This central hub serves as the office’s social heart, bringing together a mix of quiet library zones, collaborative meeting areas, and lively spaces for informal interaction. The hub fosters valuable connections, whether through focused work, coffee chats, or team gatherings.
Brand Identity and Rotterdam Spirit
SBM’s brand story is thoughtfully woven throughout. The central bar, inspired by SBM’s ships, features tiling echoing ship hulls, anchor-line motifs, and bubble-like lighting. Orange cues in the wayfinding highlight SBM’s offshore heritage. Elements from Rotterdam’s Markthal and port give staff a sense of belonging and pride in both their company and city.
Impact – A Workplace That Builds Community
SBM’s relocation and complete workplace transformation in Rotterdam have produced tangible, lasting results. Teams now share the same floor or zone, encouraging spontaneous collaboration and knowledge sharing—whether in a formal meeting or during a table tennis tournament.
